Hirsch sold food items on a railroad line, which was based in Derbent, on the Caspian Sea.  Because of this job, the family was allowed to live in Derbent, which was outside the Pale of Settlement for Jews.  Hersch was killed in a RR accident in 1909, and the family had to move out of Derbent fairly soon.  Fortunately, the RR company paid Tibel some insurance compensation for his death.90
