hi again Joel,
Its confirmed!!!!
I found her grave!!!!

her date and age at death also works out with her birthdate and age during the Canada 1901 census.

as you can see in the picture , the headstone is broken, as are a few others there.
The cemetery caretaker said they were vandalized probably by a past lawnmower person who would push the mower into the monuments, which is why it's broken off its base.

the headstone was very dirty and hard to read, so I washed it off the best I could with a bottle of water and a little rag,  so it's easier to read, but still in bad shape.

*I spoke with the caretaker, asking him for suggestions to have it remounted. He said not to go through a big company that will charge a lot, but suggested his friend who is retired from the monument making business but still has his tools and would charge much less to clean it and have it remounted on the base.

you can see in the picture that the marble part with the writing is leaning against the base.

It would be an incredible thing to do to fix her monument. I will be getting a quote from this person on how much it will cost.

*I'm suggesting that we start a GoFundMe page for the cousins... to contribute to it's repair/remounting.

here's her bio info that I have from the stone. and the Canada 1901 census.

Jennie 'Shayna Feiga" Gold (maybe its feigel) daughter of Yehoshua.

date of birth: 12 July 1850
date of death: 24 January 1917
---1 Shevat 5677

also her husband Avraham Yaakov was born on 7 October 1851.

All the best,
Rayna

ALL THE ZIMMERMANS?
I, together with my cousins, have and are continuing to identify all of the Zimmerman Family as we know it.  A great deal of information was gathered through the internet and personal records.  Most of the history is from personal account of our wonderful relatives.  We apologize for any inaccuracy and welcome correction and additions that will make this genealogy correct. We would also love to add pictures, both old and current.
The starting premise is that there were two brother in Russia.  We believe one was named Eleaser and the other Harold.  Shortly after 1900 the offspring began to migrate to the United States.  The Ellis Island website has been a big help as was the 1920 and1930 census.
Please scan the pictures and let us here from you.  We are planning reunion but the dates are undetermined.  As soon as we get organized I will spread the word.

Hi, Joel, and greetings!
By way of a quick and simple introduction, I'll tell you that I found you through Jason Pollan, Rochelle Pollan's son. We were recently put in touch with each other and I am myself trying to put together pieces of my extended family.
He directed me to your website, and as I happily clicked and scrolled I found that I knew pieces of information that you did not have...as well as recognized that I can correct information that is erroneously listed. I have very little information comparatively, so I am glad to be able to contribute something!
I am sending you this email from my phone, which is an extremely poor substitute for a keyboard and desktop monitor! However, it will take me until tomorrow to get online I fear;  in the meantime, I wanted to touch base and let you know more info was soon coming :-)
To give you a reference point of who I actually am, (might be useful!), I am David Olshina's  eldest daughter. My father David was the eldest son of Faygel "Birdie" Olshina. Birdie's maiden name was Kaufman. You have her birth name misspelled ...but we'll get to that later :-)
It will be nice to correct / complete so many blanks on my branch of the tree :-)
With warm regards,
Stacy (Olshina) Mapstone

Hi Joel -
I'm at work, so I'll be brief:
Reb Layzer - Simon Leib/Dora - Joseph Philip (Yosef Feivel)/Ida (Heike) - Stanley Irving (Yisroel Shaya 1927-2013)/Regine Suzanne Roth (Malka Shoshana 1926-)...
Stanley's sisters were Norma and Beatrice (b. around 1919, 1917, respectively).
I'll take another look at the tree and see if I can add anything.
With regard to the Vilna Gaon, maybe it's from his mother's side.

HI Joel –

Nice to hear from you, I hope you’re doing well.

After a number of years of off & on correspondence through emails & phone calls, I met your father at Passover, at the home of Karen & Lawrence Feinberg.  I also saw your uncle Gary, who I’ve met at several family gatherings.  Both of them, especially your dad, have helped me with Syracuse family research several times, and I really appreciate it.

To answer your questions –

My father, Sanford Goldberg, was born 31 May 1906 in Syracuse.  He died 22 Sep 1999 in North Hollywood CA (suburb of L.A.)

My mother, Helen Rosovsky Goldberg, was born 11 Jul 1911 in or near Syracuse.  She died 18 Oct 2000 in Van Nuys CA (suburb of L.A.)

Sam Steinberg is still my long-time boyfriend.

If I can supply more information, please let me know.

Love, Nancy

Hi Joel,
This is what I remember about Martha Lerman. She was married to David Lerman, who owned a carpet store, and her sons were Fred & Bobby. They lived in what was considered to be a fancy house on Scottholm Terrace, not far from my first office; she was either a good gardener or hired one. There might have been a daughter, Florence.
Bobby Lerman, in turn, was married to Rhoda - the obit is correct about that. I found it on the Internet as a hot link to a review of her book "Call Me Ishtar." I never met her, nor did I read any of her books. I don't have a subscription to the NY Times, but I used to buy it often when I first came back to Syracuse - it cost a dime.
Love to you and Marcia, Pop

Written by Bob Lerman, Rhoda’s husband
Rhoda Lerman, 79, formerly of Syracuse, died Sunday, August 30, 2015 at her residence in Port Crane, NY, surrounded by her family.
Rhoda is survived by Robert, her husband of 57 years; two daughters, Jill Nazimek (Greg), Julie Lerman (Rich Flynn) and one son, Matthew Lerman; a twin sister, Judy Amster (Walter); two grandsons, Josh Lerman and Zack Lerman; an uncle, Josh Langfur; and a number of cousins, nephews and nieces.
She led an exciting life, full of joy and creative endeavors. "Genius" and "brilliant" were words often used to describe her. In the late 1960's with her husband she managed a rock band called The Seven which became, at that time, one of the top four rock bands in New York state.
She wrote a one woman play about Eleanor Roosevelt starring Jean Stapleton that traveled around the country for two years to sell out audiences. It is currently playing with Loretta Swit. The play was recently presented as an opera. She also wrote several movies and a television play. She was an accomplished author who published six novels and two non-fiction books.
Her writing career began with the Syracuse New Times under the direction of Walt Shepperd. A short story which Walt published was noticed by Julie Coopersmith, then an editor for Doubleday publishers. From that connection, Doubleday published Call Me Ishtar, Rhoda's first novel. At the time of her death she was working on a new novel that had taken her 10 years to research and write. One of her book, God's Ear, won the Jewish Book of the Year award in 1989. One of her non-fiction books, Elsa Was Born a Dog, won a major award for the best work on Human-Animal bonding. Several of her books were published in England, Germany and Spain. Her books received rave reviews from major newspapers. She had the honor of having her first book, Call Me Ishtar, presented at a book signing party at the Everson Museum in Syracuse.
She wrote a number of articles and stories for a variety of journals, newspapers and magazines, including the Syracuse Herald American. She won a number of major awards including the outstanding alumni award from the University of Miami. She was the cultural delegate to the government of Tibet on the first official American delegation to Tibet in 1987. She was a board member of the New York State Council of the Arts on two occasions. She was the visiting professor of creative writing at several schools, including SUNY Binghamton, SUNY Buffalo (twice), Syracuse University, Hartwick College in Oneonta and University of Colorado in Boulder (twice.) She was also the visiting professor of Judaic Studies in SUNY Binghamton. Over the years, she was invited to be opening speaker or keynote speaker to various groups. She was the homecoming speaker at the University of Miami. She was sent to India as the American Participant Lecturer throughout India under the auspices of U.S.I.A.
For 25 years, Rhoda bred champion Newfoundlands. They were her soulmates. Of all her accomplishments, her dogs were the ones of which she was most proud and for which she was most loved. "Of all the creative things I have done, creating puppies was by far the most rewarding."
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at the Birnbaum Funeral Chapel, 1909 East Fayette Street. Friends may visit with the family from noon until 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Chapel prior to the service. Burial will be in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to Lourdes Hospice, c/o Lourdes Hospital, 169 Riverside Drive, Binghamton, NY 13905.

Date of Death: August 30, 2015

Rhoda Lerman
Rhoda Lerman, whose critically praised novels melded history with contemporaneity, mythology with social criticism, feminism with a Jewish sensibility and snark with seriousness, died on Aug. 30 at her home in Port Crane, N.Y., near Binghamton. She was 79.
The cause was complications of thyroid cancer, said her husband, Bob.
Ms. Lerman was a difficult writer to categorize because her imagination was eccentric and because her books didn’t resemble one another. A lush stylist with a vivid, sarcastic wit and a taste for ribaldry, she was sometimes compared to Philip Roth for her wicked depictions of the battle of the sexes, albeit from the distaff side.
Her first novel, “Call Me Ishtar” (1973), a lampoon of the values of a suburban patriarchal culture, reincarnates the Near Eastern deity of the title, a goddess of love, war and fertility, as a housewife in upstate New York. Her second, “The Girl That He Marries” (1976), was a fierce, if more straightforward, satire about a romance between a young Jewish man, an aspiring politician — a caricature immensely satisfying, as one reviewer wrote, “for those of us who’ve been waiting around for Alexander Portnoy to get his” — and the young Gentile woman who sets her cap for him.
But in other books, she veered from social satire to pursue other interests. In “Eleanor” (1979), she imagined what it was like to be Eleanor Roosevelt. In “The Book of the Night” (1984), she created a dizzying fantastical allegory set in the 10th and 20th centuries with a narrator that is sometimes female, sometimes male and sometimes a cow. And “God’s Ear” (1989), is a serious comedy about faith, money and fathers and sons, concerning an Orthodox Jew, a successful insurance man in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of New York City, and his journey — literal, spiritual, fantastical — to a remote town in Colorado.

“Hers is a unique voice — wildly funny, achingly spiritual, profoundly Jewish and feminist at the same time,” the novelist Brett Singer wrote about Ms. Lerman in a review of “God’s Ear” in The New York Times Book Review.
Rhoda Carol Sniderman was born in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Jan. 18, 1936. Her father, Jacob Sniderman, was an accountant who died when Rhoda and her twin sister were 13. Her mother, the former Gertrude Langfur, moved with her daughters to Florida, where she remarried and operated a small novelty store in the Miami area.
Rhoda graduated from the University of Miami, where she met Mr. Lerman, a fellow student. They married in 1957, moving to Alaska for two years while he was in the Navy. She taught school there in Kodiak. She later taught creative writing at several colleges and universities, including the University of Colorado and Syracuse.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her sister, Judy Amster; two daughters, Jill Nazimek and Julia Lerman; a son, Matthew, and two grandsons.
Ms. Lerman adapted her novel about Eleanor Roosevelt into a one-woman stage play that toured with
the actress Jean Stapleton beginning in the late 1990s and has more recently been a vehicle for Loretta Swit.

A breeder of Newfoundlands, Ms. Lerman wrote a nonfiction book that explored the relationship between humans and dogs, “Elsa Was Born a Dog, I Was Born A Human ...Things Have Changed” (2013). She’d begun exploring the consciousness of animals in an inventively plotted 1994 novel, “Animal Acts,” about a bored housewife who leaves her husband and ends up on a road trip with a gorilla named Max — “an immensely appealing character,” Publishers Weekly said.
