Notes for Sam Laroche/Lasch/Lash
Brother is Jacob Kaufman see end of notes on this for documentation,

“Papa had wavy black hair, brown eyes a nice mouth and a medium build. He was kindly and easy going.”118

“Once when my father and I were on our way to the stable, walking down Amsterdam Ave., we were stopped by federal agents and my father was asked to show his draft registration. America had declared war on Germany and the agents were looking for draft evaders. My father who had fled czarist Russia in 1905 and had an abiding fear of the arbitrariness of officials, especially police, in their dealings with Jews, was very frightened even though as a father of five children, all under the age of 8, and in his middle 30’s, he was in a deferred status.”118

Lived in apartment at 1253 Amsterdam St until 1919 then moved in with mother’s mother at 123rd St opposite Morningside Park.118

After putting everybody one in the the picture below on the family tree, I am sure that I have figured out the mystery.   This is the solution.  Rochel Leah’s elder sister, Zelda, died, so tradition mandated that Burned Kaufman married the next oldest sister to care for his child, Rose, which was Rochel Leah.  Obviously when the photo was taken he was not included in the picture and Zelda had not died yet.  Mystery solved!!

So, the conclusion above is that Sam Lash and Jacob Kaufman are BROTHERS and man named Burned Kaufman who left Russia when his daughter was just one and toiled in America for 10 years, so he could bring his wife who he last saw when she was 21 and 7 members of her family is responsible for our being in the United States.  Many of us carry his name rather than our own as a tribute to him.31
