She was partially or completely deaf.  She came to the U.S. in 1923 and brought her young cousin, Helen Hoffman, with her.  Other family members believed Shayne had hoped to marry Helen's father, Isaac-Izzie Hoffman, the widower of her cousin Priva Hoberman Hoffman (he had come to Syracuse c. 1913), but he was not interested.  She may have later married another widower with one child and settled in Syracuse.44
